Crown area hair transplant – Successful or not

Crown area hair transplant – Successful or not

Let us discuss why crown area hair transplant is difficult thing to do and get 100 % success.

This is a query asked by many patients who see our you tube channel and website . This is because they see more results of front area on our website and other websites but rarely clinics show crown area hair transplant. Now first of all I want to give you some basics after that all your queries will be solved

  1. Difference in Blood Supply– In front area we have supra trochlear artery , Supra orbital artery. From lateral side there is superficial temporal artery . All these arteries are so much thick that even long skin flaps can be raised from adjacent skin in front area of your scalp in plastic surgery. But in crown area there is not such big blood vessel so no big flap is possible from that skin . So in short the front area is very rich in blood supply but your crown area is not that much rich in blood supply.
  2. Difference in direction of hair –When we do hair transplant in front and you make any hair style, Then in most hair styles in front the hair are dragged in same direction so Hair overlap each other a lot . So if you give high density in hair line and average or low density in area just behind the hairline , no one can see the difference in densities in long hair style. So when we perform hair transplant around 50 % area can be covered by high density and rest 50 % by low to moderate density . This phenomenon is used to cover very large areas with limited number of grafts . But when you transplant the crown area , we have to design whorl to have a natural look . From center of whorl all transplant hair direction are different in 360 degrees . So ideally a high density in central area and low density in peripheral area should work in same fashion like front . But unfortunately when we try to create high densities like 50 – 55 grafts / cm in central part of whorl then because of lack of supply they does not become successful in every case .
  3. Difference in thickness of hair –When transplant is done and medicines like minoxidil are used to increase blood supply in crown area , you get a result but the hair may not become as thick as they are in front. So volume or blackness developed is less in same number of grafts . This change becomes more severe when patient try to leave medicines after 9 month or 1 year of hair transplant .

Hope now you have understood the constrains of doing crown area hair transplant. So if you are doing Crown area hair transplant then consider following points

  1. If surgeon tries to do high density transplant then transplant may fail as high density transplant requires more holes or slits . That means more trauma , more blood supply damage . You should prepare yourself that high density hair transplant is not possible in crown area.
  2. Transplant hair may remain thin to make the matters worse
  3. You should be prepared to use medicines to increase blood supply of scalp in crown area , the moment you leave medicines hair may become thin to decrease effect of hair transplant.
  4. Result may be delayed in crown area hair transplant .
  5. You may require a second session to increase density of hair transplant
